Monsoon Update: Monsoon Hits Kerala Two Days Ahead

30 May 2024, New Delhi: Southwest Monsoon has set in over Kerala and Mahe and advanced into most parts of northeast India including entire Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and most parts of Tripura, Meghalaya and Assam as of today.

Normally southwest monsoon sets in over Kerala on the 1st of June and it advances over most parts of northeast India by 5th June. Thus, southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala 2 days before the normal date and over northeast India, 6 days before the normal date.

It has also advanced into most parts of the Lakshadweep area, most parts of the South Arabian Sea and some parts of the central Arabian Sea, and some parts of south Tamil Nadu.

During the past 2 days, the cloud cover has increased over the Southeast Arabian Sea with Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR) being <200w/m2. The depth of westerlies over the Southeast Arabian Sea extends up to 4.5 km above mean sea level. The strength of Westerlies in the lower levels is about 25-30 knots. There has been widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Kerala during the past 2 days
